Re-Examining Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi

There has been a great charge against a Man whom the world accredits with the Ideology of Non-Violent Resistance, Mohandas "Mahatma" Gandhi. Was he a Racist or demonstrated Hatred towards African's, and "Aboriginal" Indians (Dalits) BKA Dravidian's?

- 1869 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi born in Porbandar in Gujarat.
(That is Northern India not southern hence he was of Aryan Indian and NOT of Dravidian ancestry)

After reading some of his early writing I conclude at this point that Mohandas Gandhi in his early years benefited from India's Caste system imposed on them by the Dutch and British colonist. It is my belief that at some point he could not see the truth, or didn't care too take notice of racism and class-ism in his own country until he left for South Africa to practice Law.

As an African American I have seen this kind of pathology among mulatto's whom more closely resemble Europeans! They tend to assimilate with the privileged classes to avoid persecution with in the Racist machine. Or are all together isolated from the reality of  racism in political correctness. A great example of this is in Malcolm X’s Autobiography by Alex Haley, Malcolm recalls when he was taken from his mother and put in to a Foster home and while there he was called “NIGGER” so much he didn’t realize it was derogatory and the way the children used it they didn’t know that it was derogatory either!.

"At the time Gandhi was born, India was a heterogeneous region, a British colony consisting of more than 500 different "native states", that is, kingdoms and principalities. (Gandhi himself was born in the state of Kathiawar.) The native states were allowed a certain degree of local autonomy, but the country as a whole was controlled by strict British authority."

I think it is safe to say Gandhi in his early years grew up in a bubble with a Westernized pathology.

-1893 Gandhi leaves for Johannesburg, South Africa for practicing law and is thrown out of a first class bogie because he is colored.

At this point Gandhi gets his REALITY CHECK, EXPRESS DELIVERY!

Take note*** "At the time, the Indians in South Africa, mostly Hindus, had no legal rights. The European colonialists did not consider Hindus to be full human beings and referred to them as "coolies"." (South Africa)

- 1906 Mohandas K. Gandhi, 37, speaks at a mass meeting in the Empire Theater, Johannesburg  on September 11 and launches a campaign of nonviolent resistance (satyagraha) to protest discrimination against [INDIANS]. The British Government had just invalidated the Indian Marriage.

So here is where I find the discrepancy Gandhi ONLY advocated for INDIAN mistreatment and not the inhumane treatment of HUMAN BEINGS in South Africa, one must question WHY?

Considering that if Indians in South Africa was granted immunity from the South African caste system, his movement wouldn't have changed the institution of inhumane treatment suffered by the darker races that he found to be so repressive and himself was a victim of! So why not advocate for the equality and humane treatment of ALL MEN in South Africa? See now the wheels in MY head are turning.

- 1913 Mohandas Gandhi in Transvaal, South Africa leads 2,500 Indians into the in defiance of a law, they are violently arrested, Gandhi refuses to pay a fine, he is jailed, his supporters demonstrate. On November 25, Natal police fire into the crowd, killing two, injuring 20.

Did Gandhi not see a need for PEOPLE OF COLOR to unite in this cause?
Or
Was Gandhi only concerned with INDIANS?
So
Did Gandhi feel as if Indians should not be treated the same as Negros?

Here is what Mohandas Gandhi is being charged with saying;

"We were then marched off to a prison intended for Kaffirs [offensive term equivalent to the n-word],"

"We could understand not being classed with whites, but to be placed on the same level as the Natives seemed too much to put up with. Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilized -- the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live like animals."

"the Indian is being dragged down to the position of the raw Kaffir" --

"whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a number of cattle to buy a wife, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness."

On white Afrikaners and Indians, he wrote: "We believe as much in the purity of races as we think they do."

HERE IS A FEW STATEMENTS FROM AN Open Letter on (Franchise Law)
by Mohandas K. Gandhi

"I suppose there can be no doubt that the Indian is a despised being in the Colony, and that every opposition to him proceeds directly from that hatred.
If that hatred is simply based upon his color, then, of course, he has no hope. The sooner he leaves the Colony the better. No matter what he does, he will never have the white skin. If, however, it is based upon something else, if it is based upon an ignorance of his general character and attainments, he may hope to receive his due at the hands of the Europeans in the Colony."

[THE WHOLE QUOTE, AFTER GANDHI AFFIRMS THE ANCESTRAL LINEAGE OF THE EUROPEAN AND INDIAN AS BEING BOTH ARYAN]

"A general belief seems to prevail in the Colony that the Indians are little better, if at all, than savages or the Natives of Africa. Even the children are taught to believe in that manner, with the result that the Indian is being dragged down to the position of a raw Kaffir. Such a state of things, which the Christian legislators of the Colony would not, I firmly believe, wittingly allow to exist and remain, must be my excuse for the following copious extracts, which will show at once that the Indians were, and are, in no way inferior to their Anglo-Saxon brethren, if I may venture to use the word, in the various departments of life—industrial, intellectual, political, etc."

"Such is India. If the picture appears to you to be somewhat overdrawn or fanciful, it is none the less faithful. There is the other side. Let him who takes delight in separating, rather than in uniting, the two nations give the other side. Then, please, examine both with the impartiality of a Daniel, and I promise that there will yet remain a considerable portion of what has been said above untouched, to induce you to believe that India is not Africa, and that it is a civilized country in the truest sense of the term civilization."

I will leave it to you to make up your mind on this allegation. But I conclude that the monument that currently stands at the MLK memorial museum should be torn down in honor of MLK’s Legacy of fighting the Jim Crow South oppressive regime.
